A sporting debut at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week
Katya Leonovich, a 27-year-old designer from Moscow, who has been showing her collection privately in New York for the past three years, presented her women’s collection for the first time in a major way at the Lincoln Center home of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
That it was a Sunday she scheduled the walk-through show was somewhat appropriate, not that it was the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, but for a much lighter reason, thankfully.
You see, Ms. Leonovich, is inspired by the visuals of that ever-so-American Sunday ritual, pro football, and the costume drama of the gridiron.
The young designer explained that she isn’t especially interested in football.
“I like golf,” Leonovich said.
But she’s intrigued and inspired by the imagery of the playing field.
“There’s so much energy,” she said.
Her designs for the spring season are based on prints adapted from paintings she’s done depicting kinetic football-stadium action.
I’m not sure it’s mainstream fashion, but it kinda works, don’t you agree?
