Spring ahead: Bold styles for the season

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week wrapped up here yesterday, leaving this message in its wake: Spring 2012 is not for wallflowers. Here are three parting shots from the runway:

RALPH LAUREN

While many designers busted out the rich purples, magentas and greens, Ralph Lauren played it soft for spring. His collection, shown yesterday morning, was a parade of blush, pale blue, soft yellow and mint, and even — egad! — some pastels. His floral dresses were lovely, if a little tame. In the “yikes!” category: wide-leg trousers with drop pleats.

ANNA SUI

Ooh la la! Anna Sui channeled Paris chic in a show that mixed high fashion with street style. Turbaned models strutted the runway in electric purple print dresses and chiffon rompers. Director Sofia Coppola was among those cheering the fiercely feminine pieces. But some of the black flower prints, especially when paired with matching turban, rocked a retro Carmen Miranda vibe.
The designer credited “Alice in Wonderland” for her inspiration, and the resulting spring collection, shown earlier in the week, was perfect for a mad tea party. Ivory ruled the runway in perforated vests and parachute jackets, and the visual feast of psychedelic prints would have pleased any angry queen — or jaded fashion editor
