Mercedes confirms first diesel SLK
Mercedes has revealed that the first diesel SLK will not compromise performance, as the four-cylinder engine will still get the roadster to 62mph in just 6.7 seconds.
Impressively, the 201bhp engine will also be capable of 57.6mpg, and CO2 emissions of just 128g/km, significantly better than the next cleanest SLK, the 200 BlueEfficiency, which manages just 43.5mpg and 151g/km.
As well as the rapid low speed acceleration, Mercedes says that a generous 369lb ft of torque means that the SLK diesel is quick at overtaking as well, with the sprint from 50mph to 75mph coming in 4.3 seconds.
This pace comes courtesy of a twin-stage turbocharger, while there is a host of other technology to keep efficiency at a premium. A stop start system comes as standard, and Mercedes has worked on areas such as the fuel injection to improve the fuel consumption.
The SLK 250 CDI will launch with a seven-speed automatic gearbox, with a manual version to follow next year.
Prices have yet to be confirmed for the UK, but the new car will be available in Europe for around £36,000 from next month.
