New York Fashion Week: The bold and the beautiful
That’s the message from Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week here where designers have embraced the rainbow — and beyond — for their spring 2012 collections.
Nanette Lepore was on a neon trip, sending jolts of citron, pink and tangerine down the runway yesterday. Lepore, who will host a shopping benefit for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation at her Boston boutique on Wednesday, explained, “I was missing color. I was ready for a burst.”
If you’re freaked by the notion of going neon, take this cue from Lepore: “With soft mints, with pale purples, it works.”
MICHAEL KORS
“Afriluxe” anyone?
That’s what Michael Kors dubbed the suede cargo pants, slouchy coats and dyed linen shirts in yesterday’s collection, inspired by the designer’s exotic travels.
The clothes, in olive, ivory and sage, were understated for Kors, whose style sense often leans heavily on glam. A-list alert: actors Zoe Saldana and Michael Douglas taking in the relaxed style from the front row.
MARCHESA
If you’re rich — or famous — enough to get your hands on a Marchesa gown, you’ll love the spring 2012 dresses inspired by the sea. Yesterday’s audience, which included Courtney Love, was treated to an ocean of tulle and chiffon. Designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig featured cascades of hand beading on several pieces, and hit one out of the park with a stunning charcoal tulle dress with encrusted bodice.
BADGLEY MISCHKA
Eveningwear icons Mark Badgley and James Mischka had mixed success with their spring 2012 show. The pair, scheduled to make a public appearance at Neiman Marcus in Boston with their Badgley Mischka line later this fall, were all over the map. There was an overwrought beaded teal and magenta dress and an unflattering yellow leather dress with bow detailing. Best in show: pieces from the pair’s Mark + James line. Tulle tops all around!
